The Musical Theatre Arts Summer Camp at Stephen Decatur High School (MTASC@SDHS) was a two-week summer program created by Gwen Lehman to serve students in grades 4 through 8 from throughout Worcester County.
Working with Rick Chapman, music teacher at Ocean City Elementary, Gwen would create an original script designed to provide performance opportunities for every camper enrolled. These one-act musical plays were based on social issue themes such as the environment. All of the characters were written to be played by kids the same ages as the campers themselves.
In just 10-days, students would go from receiving the script and auditioning to performance for a large public audience. There were fancy sets, great costumes, theatrical make-up, fun choreography, solo, small group and whole cast singing, and accomplished character development that led to outstanding performances in sophisticated short plays for kids.
